Discussion of the Relative Accuracy of the 'Matched Powder' and 'New Gun' Methods of Powder Proof.

The object of the report is to discuss the relative accuracy of the 'matched powder' and 'new gun' methods of powder proof. The average error in muzzle velocity caused by errors of charge assignment of powder lots proved by the 'matched powder' method is given for various gun-projectile-velocity combinations. Depending upon the gun-projectile-velocity combination, this average error will vary from 2 to 13 f.s.. and averages 6.6 f.s for all combinations. The average error in muzzle velocity caused by errors of charge assignment of powder lots proved by the 'new gun' method also is given, for various gun-projectile-velocity combinations. Depending upon the gun-projectile-velocity combination this average error will vary from 4 to 22 f.s. and averages 10.3 f.s. for all combinations.
