A state-of-the-art survey is presented of heavy duty composite materials for use in mechanically loaded structural elements, and reinforced metals and ceramics for use in thermally loaded structural parts. Development tendencies are discussed. Generally known and technically evaluated composites, such as glass fiber reinforced plastics are not treated comprehensively. The combination possibilities of new reinforcing materials with organic, metallic, and ceramic matrix systems and the possible future fields of application are discussed. A comparison is made of the properties of composites with conventional materials, and an estimation is given of future cost development.
