This report documents the preliminary design of a redundant Strapdown navigator using four, two-degree-of-freedom, tunedgimbal gyroscopes. NASA/Langley Research Center requirements defined in Contract NAS1-13847 are for fail-operational/failoperational reliability with a failure probability per 0.5 hour flight of less than 10-6. Accuracy is required to be 1.03 m/sec (2 knots) with radio aid updates having drop-outs up to 60 seconds in duration. Exceptionally low system cost is a firm requirement.
