A magnetically shielded enclosure has been constructed at ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Nether¬lands, for the twin purposes of providing an enclosure in which the high environmental industrial AC field would be sufficiently reduced to enable sensitive AC measurements to be made on small test units and of appraising the theoretical and practical approaches in preparation for their application to a larger installation in the future.nThe first part of this report deals with the theoretical background and shows how the design parameters were derived in the light of the required performance. From a theoretical analysis of the shielding factor and the use of a correcting factor for nonideal shape, it was found that two layers of shielding material would be required, so the design optimisation for a multi-shell enclosure was investigatednThe second part deals with the mechanical aspects of design and manufacture, the method of construction and the ways in which the various problems concerning feedthroughs, handling procedures and provision of services were solved.
