A detailed study has been carried out on a high accuracy star sensor concept incorporating a CCD area imager as the image analyzing detector. This study has not resulted in a final sensor definition, since several presently unqeantifiied characteristics of CCD have important implications for many ascents of the sensor design. Nevertheless, it has been possible to produce outline designs for the telescope and the mechanical and data processing system, to varying degrees of completeness. It has been concluded that the randon noise and bias error performance of such a sensor should be within the specification, and that the requirements on manufacture, calibration and physical and environmental constraints could largely be met. A programme to investigate the CCD characteristics in question is proposed.
