Slices of carrot crown gall supporting tissue were used to study the effect of weightlessness on respiration. Amounts of amylose, sucrose, and glucose in gall flight discs from COSMOS 728 and in comparable control discs were determined and compared. Both amylose and sucrose decreased in concentration while in the flight environment; however, there was a marked increase in the concentration of glucose. There was no detectable difference between the tissue subjected to weightlessness compared to the tissue subjected to the g environment. Results show that the overriding environmental parameter was water stress which induced the tissue to increase the number of small molecules so that water could be retained by the tissue.
