Tumor development from bacterial innoculation in slices of carrot crown gall supporting tissue was used to study the effects of weightlessness on metabolism. Carrot discs from COSMOS 782 were compared to earth-based controls. Statistically significant larger crown gall tumors developed on carrot disks on a centrifuge exposed to the space environment than those in weightlessness. This is the opposite reaction predicted from previous Earth-based gravity compensated experiments. In contrast, an increase in radius of the meristematic rings of growth centers in these teratoma type galls was observed for tissues generated in weightless conditions.
