Elements of a methodology for long term energy planning with particular reference to the introduction of renewable energy technologies, and a methodology for comparative assessment of energy systems are discussed. The discussion comprises technical and economic viability, indirect economy, environmental and social impacts, as well as the influence of uncertainty on the assessment. The role of renewable energy in future energy supply systems is discussed, with separate treatment of the situation in developing countries and in highly industrialized countries. Finally, mechanisms for the mobilization of technical and financial requirements are touched upon.
