Is a Partially Filled Cylindrical Resonator Operating on the Te sub 011 Mode Desirable for the Determination of Permittivity

The possibilities of using a partially filled circular cylindrical resonator operating on the TE011 mode for the measurement of the permittivity and the losses of dielectric was discussed. The method is suitable especially for liquids. Starting from the empty resonator fields, the analysis is extended to partially filled resonators, and the characteristic equation for the resonant frequency is derived in two different ways. Implicit formulas for the permittivity and the loss tangent, which are solved numerically, are presented. A simpler formula for the loss tangent was derived. The Born approximation leads to simple but justified formulas for diaphanous dielectrics.
