In order to gain insight into the problem of tracking an aircraft, using uncertain radar measurements, a fundamental study on the application of nonlinear filtering theory was undertaken. The theory on modeling and filtering of Markov processes, and martingale theory were used. A complete probabilistic tracking algorithm for a surveillance radar was obtained. Evaluations partly based on the tracking results for a number of live traffic samples show that the algorithm gives accurate, consistent estimates.
