The empirical relation between the radar scattering coefficient gamma and forest stand parameters and observation angle was investigated. The global procedure, the determination of the forest stand parameters, the airborne X-band side-looking radar observations, and the statistical processing of the data are described. The dependence of gamma on the observation angle is very clearly observed: for angles below 45 deg gamma depends less on the forest stand parameters than for larger angles. The correlation between gamma and these parameters generally increases after correction for the observation angle. Trunk-specific parameters show a significant correlation with gamma, in contrast with top-specific parameters and the number of trunks per hectare.
