摘要

Experiments on case hardened steel showed that quite severe wear is repeatably obtained under moderate contact pressures and very low amounts of sliding when the specific film thickness was low. It is shown that residual tension is present in a direction perpendicular to the observed fatigue cracks and having a similar relationship to the surface tractive forces. The effects of hardness, slide/roll ratio, load, and oil temperature were tested. Results show a marked dependence of wear rate on hardness difference between the contacting surfaces, in a manner consistent with the need for plastic asperity deformation. Wear depends strongly on load but is little affected by changes in sliding velocity. It is concluded that the wear mechanism consists of cyclic plastic asperity deformation; initiation of numerous, shallow fatigue cracks; and extrusion and separation of material near the crack mouths.
