Performance and Life Testing of a Qualification Model Dual Wound Motor/Gearhead

A size 18 dual-wound, permanent magnet dc motor, coupled to a size 18 precision gearhead, was subjected to ambient and vacuum performance tests and accelerated life testing. The gearhead was lubricated with a perfluoropolyether based grease. The motor/gearhead performs satisfactorily at ambient and in vacuum over a range of temperature from plus 80 to minus 45 C, and during an extensive life test in ambient and in vacuum. Performance is nominal after life testing. The motor gearhead accumulated 257 hr of operation, 50% in vacuum. The unit meets all the performance criteria. The current required for an output torque of 180 oz.in. (1.27 Nm) is in the range 300 to 380 mA. On completion of the tests the motor gearhead was in good condition.
