Performance and Life Testing of Motor Gearheads (Revised)

A size 11 permanent magnet motor, and 2 size 18 precision gearheads were subjected to air and vacuum performance tests and accelerated life testing. Each gearhead was lubricated with a different perfluoropolyether-based grease, namely Braycote 3L-38-RP and Fomblin Y VAC 3. The gearheads and the motor perform satisfactorily in air, and in vacuum over a range of temperatures from +85C to -45C, except that the gearhead lubricated with Y VAC 3 exhibits a higher current consumption for the same ouptut torque at -45C compared with the Braycote-lubricated unit. The Braycote-lubricated gearhead accumulated 61 hr of operation in air and 15 hr 10 min in vacuum. The motor, fitted with graphite-based brushes, accumulated 61 hr 20 min running in air and 33 hr 50 min in vacuum, but the brushes were severely worn.
