摘要

The role played by the Earth's orography in producing weather regimes is examined and the implications for climatology are commented upon. The relationship between general circulation model systematic errors and the representation of orography is shown and general properties of the technique of orographic enhancement are mentioned. Outstanding questions related to the concepts introduced are posed, and the relevance of such questions to the problem of extended range weather forecasting is underlined.
