International Comparison of Interpolation Procedures for the Efficiency of Germanium Gamma-ray Spectrometers (GAM83 Exercise)

Forty-one laboratories determined full energy peak efficiencies and activities of a gamma ray spectrometer by their own procedures, starting from supplied peak-efficiency data. Four data sets for four different conditions of germanium detectors were distributed. The great variety of fitting functions combined with the calculated large standard deviation of the parameters and the strong correlations which are observed, indicates that no single physical acceptable function can be recommended as a general purpose model for describing the efficiency curve of a semiconductor gamma ray spectrometer.
