Computer aided design of aircraft structures to assure static and dynamic behavior control in order to reduce operating costs is reviewed. The evaluation of interactions of the external shape, aerodynamic loads, structural geometry, internal loads, and mass distributions needs different black boxes, which are executed consecutively: a strength analysis program, a modal analysis for characteristic vibration behavior (each based on the finite element method) and an aeroelastic investigation program using matrix methods (and in particular the stiffness matrix of the structural model). Each program performs successive analyses and resizing functions for the optimization run, in a single computer submission. They are prerequisites for performance of the sensitivity analysis and the computation of constraint derivatives.
