The water absorption of epoxy resin TGDDM, upon which many commercial epoxy resins used as matrices for composites in aerospace applications are based, was followed in relation to the resin's crosslink density. The water absorption and other properties of TGDDM system, cured epoxy resins of controlled crosslink density were produced by mixing the tetrafunctional TGDDM with one of two difunctional analogs, in specific ratios, so that the functionality of the blends varied between two and four. It appears that the water absorption of a resin is the product of a combination of contributory factors which may vary from system to system, depending upon the individual resin chemistries and the curing schedules.
