Tests of Low Resistivity Electrodeless Streamer Tubes

As an option for the tail catcher of the hadronic calorimeter and the muon chambers of the H1 detector at HERA, a solution with plastic streamer tubes with low resistivity varnish to overcome the difficulties originating from the nonuniformity of the normally used high resistivity varnish of graphite is discussed. In order to allow for top and bottom inductive readout, only the side walls were painted with 1 to 2 K Ohm/surface resistivity. A set of these bottomless and coverless low resistivity streamer tubes, after laboratory tests, were arranged in chambers with longitudinal and transverse strip digital readout or pad analog readout and tested at the CERN SpS with high energy pion beams in strict correlation with usual high resistivity coverless streamer tubes to compare their performances under experimental conditions. The results are satisfactory for tracking and calorimetric purposes.
