Three dimensional simulations with the two-fluid model of turbulence (Spalding 1986) of turbulent combustion in reciprocating engines are reported. The governing equations and model formulations are given; they can be adequately solved by the PHOENICS computer code. Parametric studies of the influences of the model constants, swirl, density ratio and the presence of a bowl in the piston were performed. Results show that the predictions with the model plausibly respond to the parameter variations. The predictions with a selected set of parameters were compared with the experimental data of Bracco (1987) and the agreement is encouraging.
