This booklet was published to honor the 1989 recipient of the NASA Excellence Award for Quality and Productivity: Lockheed Engineering & Sciences Company. Operating in a total quality environment, the recipient's activities in that area are enumerated. In particular Lockheed's activities at Johnson Space Center and the role of the Engineering and Sciences Program (ESPO) in making the award are also outlined. Colored graphs are included that demonstrate points in the text. The booklet concludes with seven recommended strategies for quality and productivity that were an outgrowth of the second NASA Symposium on Quality and Productivity held in 1986. These strategies are expressed as follows: (1) leadership must commit to revitalization; (2) make quality integral to organization culture; (3) focus on the customer; (4) accept and manage change; (5) establish a process to involve and recognize employees; (6) measure activities to evaluate success; and (7) emphasize education as a key to the future.
