Effect of Fortifier on Compression-after-Impact Strength of Carbon FabricReinforced Epoxy

An investigation was conducted to determine the effect of fortifier additions onbehavior during impact and compression-after-impact properties of carbon fabric reinforced epoxy composites. The experimental materials included three matrix compositions: two with different fortifier contents and one with no fortifier as a base for comparison. The experimental work included determining absorbed impact energies, damage areas and compression-after-impact strengths for two impact energy levels as well as compression strength of nonimpacted specimens. It was found that all prepreg materials used were easy to process and produced high quality laminates. The compressive strength of the nonimpacted carbon fabric reinforced material was found to increase with the addition of fortifier while the compressive moduli when normalized to a fiber content by volume of 60 pct. showed minor increases. The addition of fortifier reduced the absorbed energy and damage areas in the specimens and also increased the compression-after-impact strength significantly. Changes in strain at failure of the material associated with the addition of fortified were not significant.
