The preparation and characterization of zirconia-alumina composites aredescribed. An overview of sirconia-alumina composites in general, and of the toughening mechanisms in particular, is given. A subdivision is made in the following composition areas: zirconia toughened alumina, alumina dispersed in Y-TZP, and intermediate compositions. A concept proposed for the densification of sirconia toughened alumina is described. The preparation and characterization of zirconia-alumina ceramic composites for high temperature applications is presented. The preparation and characterization of alumina dispersed zirconia ceramics is presented with main focus on phase composition, phase distribution and densification behavior. Preliminary sinter forging experiments of zirconia alumina, focusing on the enhancement for densification during transition alumina sintering and transition to alpha-alumina transformation, are presented. Bending strength and fracture toughness data of zirconia toughened alumina and alumina dispersed zirconia ceramics are presented.
