Issues relating to the repair of thermoplastic matrix composite materials areinvestigated. The effects of rapid heating and cooling cycles, typical of most remelting repair processes, on the crystalline morphology and interlaminar fracture toughness of APC-2 graphite polyether etherketone were examined. Methods for fusion bonding are reviewed and evaluated for repair applications. Results of repairs carried out by resistance welding and by inductive heating are presented and discussed in terms of their mechanical effectiveness and suitability as field repair procedures. A process for joining thermoplastic resin composite by resistance welding was developed with the aid of numerical thermal analysis.
