The second phase of a research project to develop an automatic vibration dataanalysis system is described. The normal graphical presentation of the data is retained and image processing methods are applied to it, coupled with knowledge about the response of an engineering system to excitation to locate the features an experienced engineer would find. Further knowledge coded for an expert system is used to identify and interpret the features found. In particular a 'blackboard' approach is used to enable a comparison to be made between the results from several blades in one stage of the engine and therefore expected to respond in a similar way. Several factors, particularly the effect of gauge position, make this comparison a difficult and challenging task, but it is essential if the system's report to an engineer is to be made in engineering units.
