This report investigates the effect of flange stiffness on the stresses set up in a plate web spar under shear when the web is well buckled and behaves like a Wagner tension field.nTest results obtained by Kuhn1 (1940) suggest that for a given condition of spar web, independent of whether buckling is fully developed or not, and throughout the current range of flange stiffness, the variation of the maximum flange bending moment is small. If true, this is an important result which merits theoretical confirmation. As it is difficult to do this when the shear in the web is not much in excess of its buckling value, a theoretical check has been obtained for the limiting case in which the web is highly buckled and acts as a tension field.
