Equations are written which govern the motion of a gas-lubricated hydrostatic thrust hearing. The nonlinear equations are solved on a high--speed digital computer for air as the gas. Systematic investigations are made of the parameters involved in order to estimate their effect on stability.nA nonstable case is taken as a standard for comparison, and stability is achieved by properly varying any of several geometric and environmental parameters. The bearing° pad volume and rigidity appear as prime control¬ling factors of stability. Smaller pad volumes and softer bearings result in more stable operation.
