摘要

The John Day River is the second longest free-flowing river in the contiguous211u001eUnited States and one of the few major subbasins in the Columbia River basin 211u001econtaining entirely unsupplemented runs of anadromous fish. Located in eastern 211u001eOregon, the basin drains over 8,000 square miles, the fourth largest drainage 211u001earea in Oregon. With its beginning in the Strawberry Mountains near the town of 211u001ePrairie City, the John Day flows 284 miles in a northwesterly direction, entering 211u001ethe Columbia River approximately four miles upstream of the John Day dam. With 211u001ewild runs of spring chinook salmon and summer steelhead, red band, westslope 211u001ecutthroat, and redband trout, the John Day system is truly one of national 211u001esignificance.
