From nuclei to hypernuclei: A retrospective view of medium energy physics atBrookhaven

A new frontier in physics originated with programs at two Brookhaven NationalLaboratory facilities--the Cosmotron and the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. The development of this frontier over a half century is described, as it turned from conventional nuclear physics to the hypernuclei and the study of strange matter.
