A key criterion for an imaging detector is the ability to perform 'quantumlimited imaging', that is to distinguish the signal charge due to a single quantum from any noise generated in the detector and/or the readout system. In addition to obtaining image intensity distribution as a function of position by quantum counting or charge integration, energy and timing measurements on every particle or photon may be performed. While a detailed optimization of an electronic readout may be different for each of the great variety if imaging detectors and their applications, all detectors, with very few exceptions, are capacitive sources if charge. The signal charge is produced either directly by ionization, or indirectly by scintillation and photo-detection.
