Analysis of the Use of Wind Energy to Supplement the Power Needs at McMurdo Station and Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, Antarctica

This report describes the analysis and investigation of wind energys potential to reduce the quantity of diesel fuel consumed to provide power and heat to the two U.S. Antarctica facilities at McMurdo and the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. Staff from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory prepared this report with significant support from Raytheon Polar Services. The analysis examined wind and load data from both stations and provides an initial estimate of the options for retrofitting these systems. The report also describes the next steps in the development of this project.
