Mechanistic models for dislocation climb are described. Particular attention is paid to a quantitative model for edge dislocation climb which appears to be the most tractable case. Qualitative discussions of the climb of mixed dislocations and screw dislocations are given. Phenomena associated with: (l) jogs as point defect sources and sinks;(2) fast defect diffusion in the core;(3) jog production by homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation;(4) jog energies;(5) dislocation dissociation;(6) dislocation constraints;and (7) the magnitude of the driving force for climb are discussed. The inadequacy of present theory in predicting unique climb mechanics is pointed out. Recent experimental results are cited. A need for quantitative experiments of a critical nature is emphasized.
