NUCLEAR CRATERING EXPLOSION EFFECTS FOR INTEROCEANIC CANAL FEASIBILITY STUDIES

Nuclear testing has provided considerable knowledge of effects of nuclear detonations. A great deal has been learned which is applicable to cratering explosions. These effects involve radioactivity, airblast, and ground motion. Based on knowledge of these effects, concepts to assure the safe application of nuclear excavation have been developed and methods have been devised for prediction of the effects. These appear adequate for feasibility studies. However, tests in additional geologic materials and at higher nuclear yields than current experience is required to assess these effects more firmly.
