This report is the second in a series presenting the progress in a continuing program to develop a solid, inorganic adsorbent for air-borne iodine species. The main topics discussed include procedures used to obtain efficient metal-cation exchange with several types of zeolites, the results of methyl iodide and elemental iodine adsorption efficiency tests of various metal-exchanged zeolites, and the methyl iodide adsorption mechanism on silver zeolite. Of all of the materials tested, silver zeolites are the most efficient adsorbents for airborne iodine species. Methyl iodide adsorption mechanism studies on silver zeolite showed that silver iodide is formed in the zeolite structure during the adsorption process.
