The morphological changes accompanying the disintegration of these leaf discs followed two basic patterns. Both patterns were similar in that disintegration of the leaf tissues was restricted to localized areas within the discs, but differed in the rate at which the epidermal layers disappeared. No relationship was detected, however, between weight loss and the patterns of disinte¬gration.nNo significant increases in the nitrogen content of the leaf discs were found that could be related to fungal protein, however caloric changes during disintegration of the leaf discs suggests an increase in fungal biomass.
