GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY SURVEY TO DEFINE IMPACT OF STATEWIDE BUILDING CODES ON SOLAR HVAC SYSTEMS COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS NATIONAL SOLAR DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM

Basically no two states are alike with respect to building codes or solar energy laws policy. State building code policy and procedure varies between the extremes of states that enforce a mandatory statewide building code to those states that simply do not have a state level building code. When a state does not have a statewide building code, it becomes the responsibility of the local municipalities and cities within such a state to establish its own policy and enforce building codes at the local level. Between these extremes, states may elect to enforce building codes that are directly adopted by reference to a national model code or possibly adopt to a national model supplemented with special state chapters or amendments. Other states will issue a statewide building code, but will delegate the responsibility for enforcing the code to the local level. Still other states will limit their codes to only certain building types (ie. , state or public buildings or multi-family residential dwellings, etc.).
