Recognition of the actual danger of underground fires is very important for the economic working of coal seams. One of the quantitative criteria of this danger would be the temperature of the possible site of a smouldering fire, the direct detection of which constitutes a very difficult problem. It is possible to estimate this temperature by an indirect method and very encouraging results have been obtained from research on the spontaneous heating of coals. It is a question of the correlation between the Graham index and the temperature of the seat of the fire, expressed by the regression equations 1 to 4, and also the proposed method of determining the Graham index characteristics of the coal oxidation phenomena proceeding in the zone of origin of the fire itself. The formulae are sufficiently complex that reference should be made to the report. (ERA citation 10:009526)
