Environmental Radiation Monitoring in Costa Rica. Final Report for the Period 1 October 1976 - 1 May 1979

The environmental natural radiation background was measured. It was found that the environmental exposure of the population at sea level in Costa Rica is lower than that for middle and high latitudes probably due to the deviation of charged particles by the terrestrial magnetic field. There are no environmental radiation anomalies in the populated areas. Although the environmental natural radiation exposure at sea level is lower than it is at higher latitudes, the actual exposure for most of the population is approximately equal to those living in cities between 40-50 exp 0 latitude, because the central plateau is at 1000-1200 meter above sea level.
