摘要

Estimates of the probable maximum precipitation (i.e., the theoretically greatest depth of precipitation for a given duration that is physically possible over a particular drainage basin at a certain time of year) are given in this study for durations from 6 to 72 hours for each month of the year for 10 sq miles areas. The results are in a generalized form, that is, on maps allowing use for planning and design of any present or proposed structure for the United States east of the 105th meridian. While smaller sized areas have greater values, especially for the warm season, they are not defined in the study. For the winter season, values for smaller areas are not appreciably different from the 10 sq miles estimates in this study. The probable maximum precipitation estimates show a smooth variation with duration, season, and location.
