Effect of Habitat Conditions on Spatial Parameters of Shorebird Populations.

The habitat ecology of shorebirds along the Arctic Coastal Plain of Alaska was studied. The long-range coal has been to develop this group as a set of indicator species in order to lay the groundwork for measuring and minimizing the impact of developing North Slope energy resourcs. This long-term research has been designed to emphasize the measurement of variability. Specifically, the seasonal patterns of abundance of different species and their variation among years, each species' habitat and the variations in their use, the biological and environmental factors that contribute to changes in abundance and habitat use patterns, and the behavioral characteristics of different species that affect their abilities to respond to changes in environmental conditions, were determined.
