Static Young's modulus, ultimate compressive strength, and relative ductility have been measured in both uniaxial and triaxial compression tests on oven-dried, copper-jacketed, cylindrical specimens from basalt cores from DSDP Hole 504B at room temperature and a strain rate of 10 exp -4 s exp -1 . The results indicate drilling rates correlate with both uniaxial and triaxial compressive strengths; compressive strengths also correlate with both static and dynamic Young's moduli of elasticity. P-wave velocity may be useful as a predictor for drilling rates. (ERA citation 08:010811)
