The element thulium (Tm) in the yttrium lithium fluoride lattice (YLF) has an absorption band which corresponds to the output wavelength of the Xenon fluoride (XeF) laser. Its fluorescence is centered around 451 nm and lasing has been demonstrated at this wavelength. The decays which take place within the energy level structure appear to be primarily radiative so that there is potentially low heat loading in this solid. In addition since it is a crystal the heat conduction properties of YLF are quite good. At first glance this appears to be a very interesting system for fusion applications. This study will examine this particular RGH/SS system further to determine its suitability for fusion applications. (ERA citation 10:023348)
