This report describes a method for studying interaction of fluids with surfaces by measuring the heat of immersion and then measuring simultaneously the surface excess and enthalpy of replacement for a series of binary solutions. The method of calculating surface excess is described. These techniques are applied to silica gel which has had different activation temperatures. Heating overnight to 400 exp 0 C results in a reproducible surface. The adsorption of n-butyl alcohol from toluene and from water upon these surfaces is compared. (ERA citation 07:045682)
