Flute Instability of Plasma in an Antiplug

The flute instability of a low beta plasma in axisymmetric traps having nonparaxial magnetic field is studied in Chew-Goldberger-Low approximation. It is shown that the favorable curvature, generally speaking, does not stabilize the flute instability of a short plasma. The maximum gradient of the pressure of a plasma confined in a cusp is found corresponding to the marginal stability against the flute perturbations. (ERA citation 08:038185)
