User's Guide for MARKAL (BNL/KFA Version 2.0). A Multi-Period, Linear-Programming Model for Energy Systems Analysis

The User's Guide for MARKAL (BNL/KFA Version 2.0) provides a user-oriented technical description of a computer model developed for use in a multi-national energy systems-analysis study conducted jointly at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and Kernforschungsanlage Juelich (KFA). MARKAL is a flexible, multi-period, linear-programming (LP) model of a generalized energy system. It is capable of representing a wide variety of configurations of national and regional energy systems and is particularly suited for comparison studies of various options under a variety of constraints and policy assumptions. The syntax, notation, formulation and input data requirements are described in detail in this guide. Programming methods and the computer software are only described briefly. This guide should enable the prospective MARKAL user to organize and prepare his input data for case studies. 11 refs., 16 figs.
