A method of accelerating protons in a synchrotron by changing from one harmonic to another in order to keep the beam near the center of the aperture without frequency-modulating the cavities is considered. Harmonic hopping is done by adiabatically debunching the beam and then rebunching it on a new harmonic. This should be possible to do without serious beam loss if a small amount, i.e., 2%, of frequency modulation is provided. Since the amount of ferrite varies as the square of the range of frequency modulation required, 16% in the case of LAMPF II, a considerable saving might be realized by using the harmonic-hopping method.
