摘要

The Silverton Road Waste Site at the Savannah River Plant (SRP) was used for disposal of metal shavings, construction debris, tires, drums, tanks, possibly asbestos, and miscellaneous items. The startup date is unknown, no records of waste disposal activities have been kept, and the site was closed in 1974. Several soil borings were taken from the disposal area in 1983. There are 30 groundwater monitoring wells located in the vicinity of the Silverton Road Waste Site, some of which have been monitored quarterly since 1982. A statistical analysis of groundwater monitoring data from this site was not conducted because of the lack of a background well. The major contaminants in the groundwater are trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene, trichloromethane, and lead. Closure options postulated for the Silverton Road Waste Site are waste removal and closure, no waste removal and closure, and no action. The predominant pathways for human exposure to chemical contaminants are through surface, subsurface, and atmospheric transport. Modeling calculations were performed to determine the risks to humans via these pathways for the three postulated closure options. Modeling calculations were also performed to determine ecological impacts. A cost estimate was prepared for each closure option. The environmental impact evaluations for the Silverton Road Waste Site indicate that the relative human health risks for all closure options are low. (ERA citation 12:044058)
