Compendium of Federal Activities Relating to the Prevention and Treatment of Family Violence

The text provides a compilation of Federal assistance programs and services for the treatment and prevention of family violence. The text is divided into the following sections: Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Agriculture, ACTION, Department of Defense, Department of Education, Department of Housing and Urban Development, Department of Interior, Department of Justice, Department of Transportation, Department of Treasury, United States Commission on Civil Rights, and General Services Administration. Funding for each of the programs or services is noted, a program overview is provided, and authorizing legislation is identified. Family violence is a serious and complex problem is emphasized, and it is defined as any physical act with a high potential for injuring the person (hitting, throwing, shoving, punching, stabbing, beating, shooting, etc.). It is also abusive or neglectful actions that can be characterized as maltreatment or harmful. Attention is focused on ongoing service programs, and it is noted that the Social Services Block Grant is the largest federal funding source for protective services for abused children and adults. Further, the Older Americans Act is shown to provide funding for services for abused elderly persons and persons in need of protection. Research and demonstration activities undertaken by the Department of Health and Human Services are summarized as are information dissemination activities. The state and local role in addressing the problem of family violence is explored and examples of private sector activities are provided.
