Detailed Model for Practical Pulverized Coal Furnaces and Gasifiers. First Annual Progress Report, May 1, 1985-April 30, 1986

The principal objective of this study is to develop, evaluate and implement a practical, three-dimensional model for large-scale furnaces and gasifiers. In order to accomplish this objective, basic experimental work and code development work must be conducted in a coordinated program. Work conducted over the past decade at the laboratory has led to the development of a two-dimensional model for combustors and gasifiers, called PCGC-2 (Pulverized Coal Gasification or Combustion in 2-Dimensions). This work provides a strong foundation for development of the three-dimensional (3-D) model. In fact, most of the concepts and some of the components in PCGC-2 can be used directly in the 3-D code. Therefore, some work of the consortium study continues on the development and evaluation of PCGC-2. In addition, some other modeling and experimental work being conducted or planned at the laboratory will potentially contribute to the comprehensive 3-D code. Foremost of these independent studies is an ongoing research program on entrained coal gasification being conducted for the Morgantown Energy Technology Center of the Department of Energy. In these cases, important progress from these independently supported studies is also summarized in this report. Such contributions are clearly identified. 76 refs., 21 figs., 10 tabs.
