Volunteer Incentives Program (Program to Encourage Volunteer Service to the Elderly)

The report discusses the Volunteer Incentives Program, a demonstration program designed to encourage volunteerism within Oneida County with an emphasis on serving the rural elderly. Local business and industry were asked to involve employees at all levels of community service. Service organizations were asked to commit time and money to local needs as they were identified. Simultaneously, all the public and parochial schools in the County were contacted. The goals were to identify a volunteer coordinator in each school building and to make community service a part of the K-12 curriculum. Further, a bibliography of printed and audiovisual materials on corporate volunteerism and curriculum materials to teach community service as a part of Social Studies K-12 were compiled. Among the unanticipated results of the program were: the Office for the Aging was able to recruit a number of new advocates for seniors from among the volunteers; a few volunteers were appointed to the Office for the Aging Advisory Council; the student art program which sends materials to homebound seniors has continued beyond the project's expiration date.
